Monk and marketer. Theologian and entrepreneur. Visionary and activator. Daniel Pryfogle works in the in-between.

As founder of Signal Hill, Daniel helps leaders and organizations close the distance between aspiration and action. He challenges the status quo while evoking the promise of flourishing. He makes plain the steps required to live fully into vision.

Daniel is cofounder of Sympara, which blurs the line between sacred and civic by repurposing religious assets for the common good. As founder of the digital news platform Senior Correspondent, Daniel connects generations by amplifying the voices of older adults for the good of society.

Daniel innovates by stepping into the gaps, where human resources and community assets are often overlooked or ignored. While others see weakness and problems in the gaps – and fear the risk and foolishness of this space – Daniel sees strength and possibility. With hope and conviction, he steps into the gaps and goes "further up and further in," as C.S. Lewis put it.

Daniel began his career as a community journalist, serving as city editor and acting editor for the Alameda Journal, then founding managing editor of the San Leandro Times. A journalistic orientation continues to shape Daniel's work as a writer and keen observer of leadership, religion, aging, and society.

Daniel founded Signal Hill in 1999 after building an award-winning communications program for senior housing provider American Baptist Homes of the West (today known as HumanGood). He is a pioneer in narrative marketing for nonprofits, especially in the field of senior housing and healthcare. He also broke ground 20 years ago by using story-driven methods and spiritual practices for organizational development, culture formation, and leadership formation.

He is the author of More Mission: A Nonprofit Adventure in Senior Living  (ABHOW, 2016) and coauthor with Nelvin Vos and Melvin George of Faith In The World: Mark Gibbs And Vesper Society, Being God's Lively People (Vesper Society, 2009).

An ordained Baptist minister, Daniel helped design and was the lead faculty member for the Nollau Institute, a leadership formation program of the Council for Health and Human Service Ministries of the United Church of Christ. He has shared his experience and insights with Wake Forest University School of Divinity, Campbell University, Cooperative Baptist Fellowship, Gathering of Baptists of Ontario and Quebec, the Ormond Center at Duke Divinity School, Glean Network, UCAN Chicago, and others.

A CoGenerate fellow, Daniel works with friends and colleagues to craft an alternative vision for aging that evokes purpose and draws generations into the shared endeavor of flourishing. He started Sympara's Aging for the Common Good writing program in 2020 and regularly facilitates small groups with older adults to explore identity, experiences of loss and discovery, and the role of elders in navigating change.

Daniel's strengths illuminate his vocation and signal the value he brings to organizations. Gallup's StrengthsFinder assessment identifies his top five strengths as: Strategic, Activator, Belief, Significance and Command. In Gallup's framing, Daniel sees alternative pathways; translates vision into action; pursues big social goals because of his convictions and desire for meaning; and guides others by evoking their gifts and their longing for a better way.

What Daniel longs for is the chance to catalyze creative leadership, leverage social capital, and maximize human potential, all for the common good. His hope is realized when he steps into the gaps, discovers opportunities, and finds kindred spirits who also lead in between.

Daniel is available for speaking engagements, retreats, and workshops. Send inquiries to daniel@signalhill.us.
